Under Illinois sentencing law, Class X felonies carry sentences of between 6 and 30 years in prison. In addition, an extended term Class X felony will carry a sentence of 30 to 60 years in prison. Extended terms can be imposed if aggravating factors exist, such as prior criminal convictions, the nature of the alleged crime as a hate crime, or the the presence of a victim over age 60. Being convicted of two or more class X felonies will trigger classification as a habitual criminal, which carries with it a sentence of life in prison.
Class X felonies are not eligible for many alternative sentencing options that lesser offenses can result in. Periodic imprisonment, impact incarceration, probation, and conditional discharge are not available to those convicted of Class X felonies.
